Connect ChatGPT to the tools you already use

ChatGPT becomes much more useful when it can work with the information and tools your business already uses.

By connecting apps, you can give ChatGPT permission to find information in your files, emails, calendars and business systems. With supported apps and the right permissions, it can take actions too.

Instead of downloading files, copying information between systems or repeatedly explaining the background to a task, ChatGPT can work with the source itself.

What are ChatGPT Apps?

Apps connect ChatGPT to other services.

Depending on the app and the permissions available, this could allow ChatGPT to search for information, read documents and messages, analyse data, bring information from several places into one conversation, or carry out supported actions with your approval.

You may also see Plugins in ChatGPT. The Plugin Directory is where OpenAI groups and distributes many of these capabilities. A plugin can include one or more connected apps alongside instructions and other tools.

Think of an app as the connection to your software or data, and a plugin as a packaged capability that may use one or more apps.

And there are many more…

The ChatGPT ecosystem is expanding quickly.

You’ll find apps and plugins covering areas including:

CRM & sales · email marketing · customer support · HR & recruitment · accounting · ecommerce · forms & surveys · project management · developer tools · analytics · design · productivity · meetings · documents and more.

Not every app is available to every ChatGPT user. Availability can depend on your ChatGPT plan, location, workspace settings, role and the particular capabilities supported by the app.

The exciting bit isn’t connecting one app

Connecting ChatGPT to Google Drive is useful.

Connecting it to your email + calendar + files + project management system is where things become much more interesting.

For example, you could ask:

“What should I prioritise today?”

Instead of answering from the information you’ve manually given it, ChatGPT could potentially consider your diary, relevant emails, project information and working documents before helping you decide.

Or:

“What am I waiting for?”

ChatGPT could search relevant sources for outstanding requests, promises, deadlines and follow-ups.

This is the shift from using ChatGPT as somewhere you go to ask questions to using it as an AI layer across the tools you already work in.

What about security and permissions?

Connecting an app doesn’t automatically give ChatGPT unrestricted access to everything in that system.

Access depends on the app, your account permissions, your ChatGPT workspace and the permissions you or your administrator grant.

For business use, organisations should consider what information an app can access, which actions it can perform, who can use it and whether approval should be required before actions are taken.

Need help working out what to connect?

You don’t need to connect everything.

The best place to start is with the systems containing the information you repeatedly have to find, copy, summarise, check or move somewhere else.

At AI Angels, we help businesses identify where AI can genuinely remove friction from everyday work, and where connecting the tools you already use could save considerably more time than simply adding another AI tool.
